Floods damage or destroy more homes than any other natural disaster – causing over $2 billion dollars in property damage every year. You may not be able to stop an oncoming flood, but you may be able to mitigate some of its damage by knowing what to do before, during, and after one of nature’s most devastating perils.
What to do before a flood
- Call Mountain Insurance Brokers for a home or business flood insurance quote. We have access to competitive programs and can provide you with options on limits and deductibles.
- Install a backflow device to prevent sewer lines from backing up.
- Put together a disaster survival kit. (3 day supply of food and water)
- Plan two evacuation routes in advance.
- Don’t use the basement for storage of important items.
- If you live in a flood-prone area, keep these materials on hand: sandbags, plywood, lumber, plastic sheeting, trash bags, shovels, work boots, and gloves.
- Elevate your washer, dryer, water heater, oil tank, furnace, and electrical wiring on concrete blocks. If you are unable to raise an item, anchor it and protect it with a floodwall or shield.
What to do during a flood
- Turn off utilities at the main power source.
- Use generators or other gasoline-powered machines outdoors.
- Be on the lookout for displaced animals; especially snakes.
- Listen to NOAA Weather Radio for current and forecasted conditions in your area.
- Sanitize your bathtub and sinks and fill them with fresh, clean water.
- If you’re in your car when the water begins to rise quickly, abandon it and move to higher ground. Don’t ever try to drive through a flooded area.
- Stay clear of downed power lines.
- If you are in need of being rescued, use white sheets, reflective mirrors, flares, and signal fires to attract the attentions of the pilots.
- Have a bag of medications, clothes, and other important items ready when help arrives.
What to do after a flood
- Before entering your home, look outside for loose power lines, damaged gas lines, foundation cracks or other damage.
- Watch out for wild animals that may have entered your home.
- If you smell natural or propane gas, or hear a hissing noise, leave immediately and call the fire department.
- During clean up wear protective clothing including rubber gloves and rubber boots.
- Do not use water that could be contaminated to wash dishes, brush teeth, prepare food, wash hands, make ice, or make baby formula.
