Most common Denver Disability Insurance questions from our clients
I have disability insurance through an employer, is that enough?
First off, if your employer offers group disability insurance take my advantage of it. Group policies typically replace up to 60% of your gross income. That may not be enough to live on. Adding supplemental coverage should bring your coverage closer to 80%.
What is the difference between short-term and long-term disability insurance?
Short-term disability has a shorter waiting period to get paid (usually 14 days) and a shorter payout period (usually a maximum of 6 months). Long-term disability has a longer waiting period (typically 90 days) and offers a significantly longer payout period (several options up to age 70).
Are disability insurance payments taxable?
YES and NO. You will not pay income tax benefits from a disability policy where you paid the premiums with after-tax dollars. Conversely, you will pay taxes if the premiums were paid with pre-tax dollars.
